Equipment Trader is a marketplace for classified adverts to be placed by sellers of equipment, spares or parts related to various manufacturing industries. In order to purchase the item(s) you find online at EquipmentTrader you will need to contact the seller direct in order to evaluate the items before purchase. In this case we offer some tips and information to help you safeguard yourself against common mistakes and fraud schemes.

Here are some helpful tips for you:

  • If the deal is too good to be true then likely it is. Don’t be fooled by crazy low prices that are not market related for the goods.
  • Talk to the seller on the phone. Make sure he has a solid understanding and knowledge of what he is selling. Fraudsters do not have technical knowledge and certainly not technical knowledge that they can share in a good telephone conversation.
  • If your seller will only deal with you on email then think again before engaging them further.
  • Look out for poor grammar and spelling. This is a red flag.
  • The onus is on the buyer to ensure that the equipment they buy isn’t a stolen item. Even if equipment is bought in good faith, the police can seize it and if it has been bought on finance, the lender can still demand payment.
  • Whenever possible go see the equipment at the seller’s premises. Ideally ensure they have the operation manuals, they understand what they are selling you and can either give you support or point you to the original dealer (in the case of second hand equipment) who can support you.
  • In so far as buying second hand equipment ensure it works before you pay for it and take it. Ask the seller to plug it in and ideally run some samples for you with your product.
  • Do not hand over any money until you’ve seen the equipment and are satisfied that the equipment and the seller are genuine.
  • Pay for the equipment when you physically collect it from the seller.
  • Ensure the seller is the recorded owner – if not, they may not be legally entitled to sell the equipment

What to do if you think you’re a victim of a scam:

Immediately contact your bank and engage them to reverse any payment you may have made by EFT.

Should you encounter any suspicious activity by a buyer/seller you can also contact Crime Line by sending an SMS to ‘32211’ or contact the police directly.

You can call 10111 or visit www.saps.gov.za to report scams.

Buying and selling manufacturing equipment can be safe and easy, as long as you are cautious and take reasonable steps to avoid common mistakes and protect yourself against fraud.
